1. Combined Transformer and Rectifier Unit
A Transformer Rectifier Set integrates a step-down transformer and a rectifier into a single system to convert high-voltage AC power into controlled DC output.
2. AC to DC Conversion
The primary function is to convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC), which is required for specific applications like electrolysis, electroplating, DC motors, and cathodic protection.
3. Step-Down Voltage Function
The transformer section reduces the input high voltage AC (e.g., 11 kV or 33 kV) to a lower AC voltage level suitable for rectification.
4. Rectification Process
The rectifier section typically uses diodes, thyristors (SCRs), or IGBT-based circuits to convert the stepped-down AC to DC voltage.
5. Controlled or Uncontrolled Output
Depending on the application, the rectifier can provide a fixed DC output (uncontrolled) or variable DC output (controlled) by adjusting firing angles of power electronic devices.
6. Cooling System
TR Sets are generally air or oil-cooled, especially in high-capacity systems, to handle heat generated during AC to DC conversion and ensure continuous operation.

1. Three-Phase Power Supply
These transformers are designed to handle three-phase electrical loads, making them suitable for industrial, commercial, and utility applications that require balanced power distribution.
2. Oil Cooling System
They use insulating oil for cooling and insulation. The oil absorbs heat from the core and windings and dissipates it through the transformer tank to maintain safe operating temperatures.
3. High Power Capacity
Three-phase oil-cooled transformers are built for medium to high power ratings, typically ranging from a few hundred kVA to several MVA, depending on the application.
4. High Efficiency
Engineered for efficient performance, they typically operate with 96% to 99% efficiency, reducing energy losses during voltage transformation.
5. Durable Construction
These transformers are housed in robust, sealed or conservator-type steel tanks designed to withstand environmental stress, mechanical load, and outdoor conditions.
6. Better Heat Management
The oil-based cooling provides superior heat dissipation compared to dry-type transformers, making them more suitable for continuous and heavy load operations.

1. Voltage Transformation
Electric distribution transformers reduce high transmission voltages (like 11 kV or 33 kV) to lower levels (like 400V/230V) suitable for homes and businesses.
2. Power Rating
They are available in various ratings, commonly from 25 kVA to several MVA, depending on the load they are meant to serve.
3. Cooling Methods
Cooling is typically done using oil (like ONAN – Oil Natural Air Natural) or air in dry-type transformers to prevent overheating.
4. Insulation
Insulation materials include mineral oil, synthetic esters, and paper-based components to withstand electrical and thermal stress.
5. Core Construction
The core is made from laminated silicon steel to minimize energy losses due to eddy currents and hysteresis.
6. Efficiency
Distribution transformers operate with high efficiency, usually between 95% to 99%, with losses divided into core losses and copper losses.
7. Protection Features
They include fuses, circuit breakers, temperature sensors, and pressure relief devices to ensure safety and prevent faults.
